Matagot (The Crimes Of Grindelwald)

An elegant creature

As in the legend, the Matagot is a kind of big black cat. For the film, the creators seem to have been inspired particularly by the cats of the sphynx race with their lack of hair but this time with a black skin. He is represented sitting but we can see that his front legs are not exactly those of a cat, not to mention his fangs which are particularly impressive. Finally, his huge purple eyes shine in the dark and add to his ferocious side.

A mysterious bodyguard

The Matagot is one of the new mysterious creatures we discover in The Crimes of Grindelwald, the sequel to The Fantastic Beasts focusing on the hunt for the evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald. It is an animal from French folklore, a kind of giant cat that can, depending on the version, bring good luck or bad luck. In the film, we see several of them when Newt goes to the French Ministry of Magic and they seem to serve as a kind of guard cat.
