Alebrije Dante (Coco)

A colorful spirit

Dante is represented here as a spirit guide with a very colorful body like what we see in the world of the dead. We can see his dog-like body, a bit skinny and hairless, and he is sitting on his butt. His body has touches of yellow, orange, pink, green, blue, red, etc… and also many patterns. It has in addition small wings in the back which allow him to fly. His head is mainly pink and he has a big smile which lets show his big blue tongue.

An adorable spirit

Dante is an important character in Disney’s Coco cartoon. It takes place in Mexico during the Day of the Dead. The young hero, Miguel, is passionate about music but is forbidden to practice it because of one of his ancestors who left his family to pursue his career. Dante was a stray dog whom Miguel took in and who became loyal to him. When Miguel wants to borrow the guitar of Ernesto de la Cruz, the deceased local hero, he is transported to the world of the dead and Dante follows him. He will then need the help of his ancestors in order to return to the world of the living. While Dante may seem a bit silly or overly enthusiastic, he is in fact very sensitive to spirits and his actions will always lead Miguel to his family and help him discover the truth. At the end of the film, Dante becomes an alebrije”, a spirit guide for Miguel’s family
