Dobby (Harry Potter)

An adorable little elf

The house elves in Harry Potter are nothing like the elves in Lord of the Rings. They are small creatures measuring about 50 centimeters. Although they are rather ugly, they are quite endearing and have big eyes that make them cute. As you can see on this figurine, they have a light pink skin. The house elves are not allowed to wear real clothes to mark the fact that they are slaves. So as we can see in his first appearance, Dobby is wearing a dirty pillowcase. At the level of the head, we find his big black eyes, his big nose and especially his very big pointed ears. Finally for a house elf to acquire his freedom, it is necessary that one gives him a clothing. At the end of the second film, Harry hid a sock in Voldemort’s diary and gave it back to Lucius Malfoy. When Lucius Malfoy denied that the diary was his, he gave it to Dobby who found the sock and was freed. He is therefore logically represented with this sock in his hand.

The house elf turned hero

Dobby is a secondary but still important character in the Harry Potter saga. This literary saga for children composed of seven books was so successful that it was adapted to the cinema in eight films and it is from these films that the figurines are drawn. Harry is a young English boy living with his aunt and uncle since the supposed death of his parents in a car accident. He discovers, on his eleventh birthday, that he is a wizard and joins the Hogwarts school. He discovers a wonderful world but also learns that his parents were in fact killed by Voldemort, the most terrible wizard who ever existed. And Voldemort is not as dead as everyone thinks. At the beginning of the second year, a house elf arrives at Harry’s house and wants to prevent him from going back to school because terrible things will happen there. He tries several times. The house elves are slaves for the wizards and Harry will discover at the end of the year that Dobby belongs to the Malfoy family and that the terrible thing which arrived at the school was the fact of Lucius Malfoy. Harry made sure that Dobby was freed from his slavery. If we see him more often in the books, he reappears only in the penultimate film. He will help Harry, Ron and Hermione to escape from the Malfoy house where they were prisoners but will take a fatal stab at the same time. Dobby is an endearing character and a favorite of many fans.
