Oberyn Martell (Game Of Thrones)

The Viper of Dorne

Oberyn Martell is a character from the books A Song Of ice And Fire” by George Martin and the series “Game Of Thrones” which is derived from it. The character appears at the beginning of season 4 (in the middle of the 3rd book). Although he doesn’t stay long in the series, he will trigger a series of important events and make the readers and viewers discover a part of Westeros they had only heard about then. Oberyn is the brother of the crown prince of Dorne. We meet him when he comes to King’s Landing, on behalf of his brother too ill to travel, for the wedding of Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell. But Oberyn, nicknamed the Red Adder, has another idea in mind when he comes to the capital. He wants to shed light on the very violent death of his sister Elia, his nephew who was still a baby and his niece, and if possible to take revenge. Elia was the wife of Rhaegar Targaryen, son of the previous king, whose entire family was slaughtered when the Baratheons took over. Oberyn believes that the murder was carried out by the monstrous Gregor Clegane “The Mountain” and probably ordered by Tywin Lannister. Oberyn has a rather sulphurous reputation as a great expert in poisons, and having sired numerous bastards whom he cherishes, as others in Westeros cherish their legitimate children. When Joffrey is poisoned during his own wedding, it is Tyrion, his uncle, who is falsely accused by his sister Cersei Lannister. When Tyrion is found guilty, he requests a trial by combat. A champion must then fight to the death for him against the champion of the throne, in this case, Gregor Clegane. Oberyn then volunteers to be his champion and it is in this outfit that he is represented. This is logical since it is by far the scene that we will remember the most of this character. If his outfits are usually more colorful and “eccentric”, Oberyn chooses of course a more practical outfit to fight. However, he surprises many people by coming into battle with a simple light leather armor instead of a heavy metal armor. We quickly understand that this is what will allow him to compensate in speed and agility, the strength and power of Gregor Clegane. We can recognize his armor in red brown tones with snake scale patterns, which remind us of his nickname. As in the series, he wears boots and a brown tunic, and everything is still finely realized by Funko. Thanks to his hairstyle, his mustache and his thin goatee so characteristic, we recognize perfectly the face of the character played by Pedro Pascal. Finally, unlike his opponent, who carries a heavy sword, Oberyn fights with a thin and light spear, and Funko has of course represented it in the character’s hand.
