Hoban Washburne (Firefly)

The pilot with Hawaiian shirts

As for the other figures of the Firefly series, Funko was inspired by the only series of promo pictures made. As Wash has never been in the army, he doesn’t wear a western style outfit like Mal and Zoe but something closer to a pilot or mechanic suit. As on the photo, we find this khaki suit with black shoes. But what makes Wash’s look special is his Hawaiian shirts that he wears in all circumstances! On this figure, it is turquoise with palm tree patterns very finely reproduced. His face is very simple but it remains very recognizable with his light blond hair and this characteristic cut. Finally, what makes this figurine particularly cute is the plastic dinosaur he is holding in his hand, which is nicely done. This refers to his first appearance in the series, when we see him playing with two plastic dinosaurs that are on his dashboard.

The comedian of the team

Hoban Washburne is one of the central characters of the series Firefly”. Not having found its public at its release, the series lasted only 14 episodes and 1 TV movie. It is however considered, today, as cult by many fans. This explains the release of this series of pop figures! Firefly is a futuristic science-fiction series with a western/steampunk atmosphere, taking place a few hundred years in the future, when humans have colonized the galaxy. It’s a clever mix of action, government conspiracies and humor! The action is centered on the crew of a ship, the Serenity, whose more or less legal activities range from transporting passengers to transporting illegal goods, including burglary. The ship is captained by Malcolm Reynolds and his first mate Zoe, both of whom had fought with the Independents against the current government: the Alliance. Hoban “Wash” Washburne is the pilot of the ship but also the husband of Zoe. If we know that she didn’t like him at their first meeting, we can imagine that he finally managed to conquer her with his humor and his big heart. For that and his taste for the Hawaiian shirts, we can bring him closer to another emblematic character of Joss, Xander Harris of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. With Kaylee, the mechanic, it’s up to them to make sure that the ship can still fly!
